Michael Torvinen Appointed Department of Administration Deputy Director

Carson City, NV - August 28, 2012

State of Nevada Director of Administration Jeff Mohlenkamp today announced the appointment of Mike Torvinen to the position of Deputy Director of the Department of Administration, effective Monday, September 10, 2012. Torvinen previous served as the Deputy Director of Fiscal Services for the Department of Health and Human Services.

A graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno with a degree in Business Administration, Torvinen is also a Certified Public Accountant. He began his career with the State of Nevada in 1986 as a Legislative Counsel Bureau Audit Supervisor, where he served for 9 years. He then moved to the Department of Health and Human Services as an Administrative Services Officer IV in the Division of Mental Health and Developmental Services. He later became the Administrative Services Officer for the Director’s Office before being promoted to Deputy Director for Fiscal Services in 2002. As Deputy Director for DHHS Fiscal Services, Torvinen was responsible for oversight of the agency’s $6 billion budget, along with supervision of the various Division Fiscal Officers and Administrators, among other duties.

Prior to his state service, Torvinen worked in public accounting for 8 years. He is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno with a degree in Business Administration. He is also a Certified Public Accountant and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

In his position as Deputy Director for the Department of Administration, Torvinen will be responsible for overseeing, planning and coordinating the operational functions and activities within and between the divisions of the Department of Administration. He will identify, analyze and resolve issues and problems as well as review and ensure implementation of administrative directives, guidelines and policies. In addition to many other duties, Torvinen will serve as principal advisor on divisional management operation and administrative matters, statewide budgetary issues, and revenue projections.
