- August 28, 2017

Las Vegas, NV - Three Las Vegas-area students will receive awards for their winning submissions to the Library of Congress’ Letters about Literature contest and will be honored Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 3pm.
by Nevada State Library & Archives at a reception on the first floor of the Grant Sawyer building, 555 E. Washington Ave., Las Vegas.

Letters about Literature is a reading and writing contest sponsored by the U.S. Library of Congress Center for the Book in Washington, DC. Students in grades 4-12 are asked to read a book, poem or speech and write to that author (living or dead) about how the book affected them personally. Letters are judged on a state and national level.

Out of more than 47,000 letters submitted nationally, three winners were chosen from each state and the District of Columbia (103 total). Three Las Vegas-area students were given this honor. These winners then re-submitted their letters to the Library of Congress, which determined the national finalists. Northwest Career and Technical Academy (Las Vegas) student Apoorva Chauhan was declared a National Winner (Level 3) for her letter to Stephen Chbosky, author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Nevada State winners are:
• Level 1 (grades 4-6): Elise Choi, individual entry, Las Vegas, who wrote to Kate Douglas Wiggins about the book, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm
• Level 2 (grades 7-8): Charlotte Thaler, Adelson Educational Campus, Las Vegas, who wrote to Rupi Kaur about the book, Milk and Honey
• Level 3 (grades 9-12): Apoorva Chauhan, Northwest Career and Technical Academy,
